Restricting Estimates

We are trying to set up a system that would allow us to approve estimates BEFORE they are printed, emailed, faxed or converted to sales orders.

I know that there is a feature request in the works - but in the meantime has anyone made this work with scripts? In looking through the scripting guides I get the idea that there is no way to control the functions listed above (print, fax, email, convert to sales order)

Anyone gotten around this limitation?
