Can't 'close' opportunities

Hi,

I assume that once an opportunity is 'lost', we change the status of the opportunity to 'closed lost' and the % is auto set to 0%.  Therefore, it should be 'closed'.

However, when we run opportunities reports and sort for 'open' opportunities, the supposedly 'closed lost' opportunities still appear in these searches.  The same problem appears when we click the reminders 'opportunities to close'.

Can anyone please point out how to 'close' an opportunity and not have it appear on the searches and 'opportunities to close' reminders?  Help is much appreciated.  Thank you.
