Tag for customer ID in custom email templates.

If you are at the customer level and issue a CRM message (email message) using a template to the contact on the record - what is the field you select for company id in the UI. ?.  NLID seems to pull the internal id and not the generated (auto) customer number.  You can get the customer name etc etc.. but nothing to do with the ID - or at least I cannot find it ?. any ideas ?.
