How to 'uncancel' a Cancelled Sales Order?

A Sales Order was cancelled by accident. In this situation one apparently can not Edit the Order's Status field to reset it to e.g. 'Pending Approval'.
Is it at all possible to undo the Cancel action? If not, what is then the recommended procedure?
