letter merge with related record fields

I have a need to perform a letter merge on a custom record and also include fields from an entity record.  In the past I have needed to create custom fields for all the data not on the main record, then set the values with SuiteScript.  It works, but it's ugly.

I'm wondering if there have been any recent changes to allow merge fields from more than one record?  I can imagine a syntax like RECORD_ID:FIELD_ID which would be pretty simple to use.

Anyone know if this is possible yet?  Anyone from NetSuite care to comment if this is coming any time soon?
