Opportunity link to Prospects

Our VP of sales is not happy with the link the Netsuite puts between the prospects and the opportunities.  We recently converted from Salesforce where the opps and prospects were not so tightly linked.  The statuses between the two were separate and we often have multiple open opps for a prospect.

So - My question is - if we disable the opportunities under the company features, can we still setup and report on opportunites and effectively break the link with the prospects?  If we do this, what about the forecast percentages?
