Promotions and creative solutions

I read a post somewhere where someone said that more flexibility could be had of the marketing/promotions feature by using the Partners feature to differentiate between customer types. So I created a "fake" partner and associated it to a wholesale customer. Then I created a promotion and added the fake partner to the promotion. This worked great on the backend as the single customer I set the promotion up for could get the promotion but no one else could (in other words, retail customers could not use the code).
