< NLID > showing incorrect Id number

When I place <nlid>    in a email template it is showing the wrong ID number in the emal that gets sent out?    , I want it to show just the contact or leads ID number..  

So when a customer replies I can quickly see what there ID number is and then search netsuite quickly for them..

Any Ideas why?
