Lead ID generated from email address

How can we have the Customer ID for new Leads submited via Online Customer Forms use the customers email instead of the customer Name?

We can only track our existing customers by email address in our e-commerce system that we sync with Web Services.

A custom script is the best solution or something else? Any suggestions what the script would look like if so? Have not had to deal with scripts yet.
