How to: read in field value to populate list

Hello -

First timer here so bear with me.

I am looking to do the following and need some guidance:

1. When a case is created one of the fields captured by our support desk is the Serial Number of a device.  I need to grab that Serial Number and do a search for any existing open Cases or RMAs for that particular Serial Number.  I have in mind either a button that would open a new window showing any open cases or RMAs or once the Serial Number is entered having a pop-up showing the open Cases or RMAs for this particular Serial Number.
