Mass update Customer ID

We have Customer ID enabled and we've been using it for the wrong information, we've not moved the information which was in that field to a new field as part of a clean up and now I am struggling to mass update the Customer ID (Name or whatever else they've called it!) using the mass update tool.

Annoyingly I can do it the other way about, how does one make a field available for mass update?
