help - alert sent when status is not changed

I would like to build an alert to go to the sales rep once the status of a deal lingers too long in a particular status.  Each status would have a particular timing to adhere to.

We have a long sales cycle to begin with and I'm trying to contract it by setting alerts to ask for the validity of a deal panning out.

I'm researching the average timing between statuses for the sales team as a whole and per sales rep to determine the best trigger timing.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.
