Can't Delete Groups Due To Child Records

I want to delete some contact groups that were created, but are no longer needed.  When I try to delete the groups they fail indicating that there are child records.

Two points:

* How does one determine what child records are preventing the action?

* How can one remove members from a group that is dynamically based on a saved search?  I tried to list no search, but it's a required field.
