Reports in ABC order when Auto #'s are used

Thought I'd start the new communtity with a helpful hint. We turned on auto numbering only to find that the reports showed customers/vendors in numerical order, rather than alphabetically, as we are used to.
I looked for the answer, submitted a request for enhancement, (which was going to be in the next upgrade, then was put off...)
I found a way to sort the reports alphabetically. I'll use the AP Aging summarry as an example.
Open the AP Aging in customize mode. The following method does not show the vendor # in the report at all:
Step 1: Go to the sorting tab. Where it lists "vendor" the field chosen is Name (Grouped). Change this to COMPANY NAME. Click Done.
