Transaction Total vs Gross Amount?

When working with Report Builder, I often see the fields "Transaction (Total)" and "Amount (Gross)".   However I never see a difference in the actual values when the report is run...although we haven't gone live yet so it may very well be that I just can't see the difference yet.  Can anybody clue me in as to their intended use and what the difference is between them?
