total sales by period

Fellow NS users,

I currently have a report that shows a matrix with sales per item as follows:
         item1 ... item2 ... item3
date1
date2
date3


Instead of by date, i would like to report by period.
For example, for the sales of item1:
jan-1   2
jan-2   5
jan-3   1
feb-1   4
feb-2   1

the reports should show
jan       8
feb       5


Does anyone know how to get this done?
