Pull only one address for a contact

Maybe I am missing something big here, I've been using NetSuite for almost 3 years and have never been able to pull a clean contact list with addresses.  I get multiple addresses for each contact and can't tell which one is the actual contact's address and which may be a billing address, shipping, etc.  Am I doing something wrong?
