Letter Merge - Can't get "Mr./Mrs. field on letter

I'm trying to create a letter template that brings in the data in "Mr./Mrs..." field form the Contact Record ... so that the letter says "Dear Mr. Robert Smith" or "Dear Chief Mike Anderson". The letters are being driven by the Customer record (do searches and mail merge based on the Customer Record).  I can pull the contact names but need their salutation as well.
