Why is Netsuite Word Merge such rubbish?

I have just been looking at Surgar CRM, a free CRM product. The Word Merge function is fantastic compared to Netsuite. I always seem to have trouble with Netsuite mail merge and end up not creating templates due to the hassle!

Has anyone found a way to improve the basic functionality for netsuite word mailmerge?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!
