access to merge related data fields?

Wasn't sure what to enter in the subject for this one!

Basically, I want to include the "number of attachments" in my fax cover sheet.  The number of attachments is variable, so if we could have a tag like:
<<NLMERGEATTACHMENTCOUNT>> I would be able to include this in the cover letter.  People would be impressed, I would be a geek superstar.

Any enhancements out there for such a feature?
