CSS Best Practice for Email templates

Hello,

Is there a best practice method for email template for email messages?

Ideally, I would like to define the CSS for all messages at a GLOBAL level, rather than on a per message basis?

Should I embed the CSS or link to CSS?

Looking for the best advice.
