The Basics

I'm just trying to get my head wrapped around the basics of FreeMarker, I can put ${transaction.tranid} and get a value but I get syntax errors with ${salesorder.id}.  I don't really know what I'm doing wrong, the documentation and examples are no were to be found in the help center. 

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, do I need to install a bundle or something?

If anyone has a basic invoice also I'm curious how that accomplished.
