deactivating item and adding new item with same name?

I need to remove the Income Account from about 250 Inventory Item records.  Not change the account, but remove it as these items are Raw Materials.

Problem is I can't edit the existing items as they are used in transactions already... lots of them.

I started playing with CVS import/export to solve the problem.  I haven't used it before so there was some trial and error, but I got pretty close.

My plan was to deactivate the current Items
Create new items with the same name but not Income Account

This is flawed because what ends up happening is that I just re-activate the same items and by leaving Income Account blank, it uses the saved value (per my Import job settings)
