image import, and ampersan sign problem

I'm importing  a few thousand items with CSV, and I'm having a problem with the images taking to the items. In the image column, put: path/to/images/imagename.jpg and that didn't work and I also tried imagename.jpg and that didn't work. I thought that it could be the entire address to the image http://www...... but the address is not a direct link and it would be impossible to copy and paste a few thousand links of images.


My ampersan (&) problem  is that some of my categories have the & sign in it, and its failing the entire import. is there a replacement for the character? didn't think & would work because it again has the & sign in it... not exactly sure how that works.
