Item import: combo box fields

I've been reading through the docs and I'm still unclear on how you associate values to fields that are relational to custom lists or custom records or even other netsuite records such as vendor or site category? I assume this is done in the field mapping area but I don't understand how?

For instance there is an area on the netsuite field side of the mapping tool for Item Vendors and if you expand that you see several more folders called Item Vendors 1, Item Vendors 2, etc. How is this used?

This is pretty much a show stopper right now as I'm getting an error on the first relational field:
