Lead & Contact Import

Help!
Can someone break down the process for importing Leads & Contacts togather & leads & contacts seperately. For the life of me....I cant seem to get it right! If seperately-which comes into NS first? Leads or Contacts? Seperate CSV files for import? As in Lead File/Contact file?
Any help is appreciated!
