Load List on Field Change

Is it possible to load a list upon a field change?

Here is what we are trying to do:
We have a list that the user chooses one item from. This in turn, changes the available options in the next field. Each time the initial field is changed, the list in the next field would change as well dependent upon what was selected in the first field.

I didn't find an API that would specifically let me do this, or at least that stated this is such terms. Any ideas?
