Error Trying to Load Item Record

I'm trying to load an item record with this snippet:

myRecord = nlapiLoadRecord('item', 21);

This does not seem to work.

Any code after this call fails to execute.

Is 'item' the correct String for the type argument?

Is there a way to see any error output from Netsuite?
