Searching Custom Record Types

I'm writing a script that will search to find the customer attached to a Custom Record Type record.  Customer is a field in the Custom Record Type.  I'm not quite sure how I would search for a custom field in a custom record type.  I've done searches and pulled values for standard fields, but the documentation hasn't helped. 

I would post code, but I've tried many times and I'm not sure it would help. Has anyone had luck doing searches for Custom Record Types?

Any suggestions would be helpful.
