500 Return Limit is a bother!

Is there anyway to retrieve the rest of the records returned in a search if it is over 500 records.  At this point I have been able to break up the searches into reliable chunks of 500 records or less but it is not an optimal or long term plan since eventually that chunk may exceed the 500 mark.

Also, I have tried to get my entire customer list of over 500 records by creating two different searches, one ascending and one descending.  Unfortunately the sort preference is not carried over to the search in suitescript when it is returning the results.  Is this a bug or is it meant to act this way?
