Scripting Customer Paymemts

I'd like to create customer payments via a server script and apply the payment to an existing invoice to settle it.

I can retrieve and examine existing payments but cannot figure out how to populate a new payment record and submit it - all my attempts result in various error messages.

Does anyone know if it's possible to create payments via server scripting?
