Available Serial Numbers

I need to return a list of available serial numbers for a given item on a server side script. I've tried creating Saved Searches but can't seem to flag only the available ones. I suppose I could get a list of all serial numbers and then tick through each one to see if it is already attached to a cash sale but that is ugly and I'd prefer not to do it.

Is there a script means of viewing the On Hand serial numbers for a given item?
