Campaign Search - Identifying Recipient Type

I have a campaign that is being sent to both customers and contacts. I am doing a search on the campaign to retrieve all of the recipients. For each recipient I need to get the contents of a custom field on either the Customer or Contact.

My problem is that the recipient field returns an internal id and I don't know if it for a customer or contact, so I don't know which one to access.

Anyone know how I could tell the recipient type ?
