nlapiRemoveOption

Can someone from NS clarify how nlapiRemoveOption works?? I keep getting an error when trying it, and the documentation barely says anything about it. What's the trick? I'm trying to use it on a multi-select populated with the names of a bunch of custom records - I want to remove some of them using this function. Can it be done or am I misunderstanding the use of nlapiRemoveOption?
