Help on testing variables

As a poor / new programmer I want to test values all the time to see if they are what I think they are - I used alert in the client side scripting and writeline to test a scheduled script in portlet mode.

What I would like to do now does not fit in well using a portlet but I still want to be able to test and view variables - how do I do this for server side scripts ?

All help appreciated.
