Getting URL for parent

I have 2 custom records (say CR1 and CR2) linked by a field and on CR1 the field is sourced from the name of the record in CR2 and also the Record is parent box is saved.

when i VIEW / EDIT CR2 the 'link' is there.
when I use script to look at CR2 (in edit mode) and do
HSR = nlapiGetFieldValue("custrecord_wg_extrasrecord");
hsr is null ?

any ideas ?
