Best practice for testing Server Side scripts

I need to write a Server Side script to calculate Gross Profit per line item on orders coming in via our website.  All the NetSuite documentation says to fully test your script before deployment, but doesn't tell you how to test without deploying.  I only have one account, so how can I test a server side script without deploying it in my account?  I keep hearing talk of a Sandbox, but don't know if I have access, or how to get access.
