changes to timeitem 'price' field don't stick

i'm trying to change the 'price' field of timeitems on cases using server event code (beforeSubmit), but the changes don't get saved.

if i do
record.setLineItemValue('timeitem','price',i,'24')
and then
record.getLineItemValue('timeitem','price',i)
it appears to have been changed, but after saving it remains on its original value.

other changes (eg to the isbillable field) do get saved, and i can change the price field with client-side code and the changes get saved.

any ideas?
