nlapiSearchRecord with Lead/Prospect/Customer

The way I understand the nlapiSearchRecord function searches customer (lead/prospect/customer) records is by specifically calling the stage as the record type.

i.e.

nlapiSearchRecord('lead', null, ...)
nlapiSearchRecord('prospect', null, ...)
nlapiSearchRecord('customer', null, ...)

Is there a way to search across all stages of the customer record?
I'm guessing nlapiSearchRecord('customer', null, ...) might work, but I don't see this in the documentation anywhere.
