Using Formula to access custom field in parent custom record?

Hi there,

I have a custom record and would like to set the default value of a field to the same value as that of another custom record field for which the other custom record is its parent.

I'm trying to do this using the Formula field but cannot get the correct syntax - can anyone help?

For info, it's the ID field (not the internal ID, but the ID that answers to {name}.  I would have sourced it in, except for some reason, my source list isn't showing all the fields that are in the source custom record.
