GetFieldValue on an inline text hyperlink returns text

I have a form with a hyperlink field that I've set to inline text. When I use nlapiGetFieldValue on this it returns the displayed text (and setfieldvalue changes the displayed text) rather than the underlying link value.

Are hyperlinks treated differently through the API? Is this "by design" or is this producing the wrong value?
