How to use the 'source' from addField()?

addField(name, type, label, source, tab)

source - The internalId or scriptId of the source list for this field if it's a select field.


How do you go about using source? How do you create the script that populates? I mean, I can create a script file and upload it as a script... but I don't get it. Upload it as what kind of script? User Event? And what do I name the function that populates the field?
