Some fields not sourcing from Sales Orders

I have just noticed that quite a variety of fields on a sales order cannot be sourced through to an invoice even using script.  In particular, sales order shippingcost or subtotal returns no value if accessed through a script, field or search:  Examples:
(a) formula (eg. {createdfrom.shippingcost} or;  
(b)  in a script nlapiLookUpField("salesorder",1670,"shippingcost)

Either of these are fine with many other fields from the sales order.

Anyone have any idea why?
