doSourcing of Column fields

Is it possible to force the sourcing of column fileld via scripting?

I have a server script on salesorder which load the selected item in the line & get the purchaseprice based on some conditions.

For this I created a column field called Item Type which is sourced from the itemtype of the selected item.Could'nt find another way to load the item without knowing its itemtype.
The disadvantage is for the existing salesorders,this field is blank & I need to reselect the item inorder to make this field populated.

I tried to submit the sales order with doSourcing = true, but this does not works for column fields.
