Cannot Set 'shippingcost' On Transaction Forms

This problem was first reported in an earlier thread on this forum but no answer from NetSuite was provided other than they had duplicated the problem on their end. I am bringing up this issue again because this is a crucial bit of customization that we must be able to do. My company is a wholesale distributor and as such, setting and enforcing freight policies is essential to running our business profitably.
Here is the problem. The 'shippingcost' field cannot be updated using a client-side SuiteScript on transaction forms. Here is the code snippet I am using to test this:
