Calculating time since last case update or creation

I'm trying to calculate the time since a case was updated or created.   Looking into the case data fields, the only related information is the creation date.   However, scanning this forum and the help files didn't give me any information on how this date is stored.  I tried to add a debugging statement into my script, but it shows the value of the creation date to be empty.  How do I work with the date information stored in the case creation time field?  How do I relate this information with that retrieved from the Date() method?

The idea is to write a statement like:

Howdy, Stranger!
