Getting field values from Parent Customer

Our NetSuite application uses a Parent Customer form (Customer) and a subcustomer of the parent is created when a sales order is created. I need to source a field value from the Parent Customer to the SubCustomer Form.
So if I select a checkbox on the parent form I want it to also get checked on the SubCustomer Form. Since both of these are Customer Entities the normal field sourcing does not appear to work. If I create a checkbox on another form type (Partner) and source it to the SubCustomer, it works okay. Any help ideas?
