User Notification / Interaction from server side scripts

Is it possible to pop-up dialogs to the user from a server side script?  I'm looking for functionality similar to 'alert' and 'confirm'.  I would like to use a server side script to do some form validation, but if there is a problem, or I need to confirm something with the user, how can I notify them?
