Defect? - nlapiGetFieldText('parent')

On an item record, nlapiGetFieldValue('parent') will return the internalid of the parent, but nlapiGetFieldText('parent') does not return anything.  Should't it return what is displayed in the UI?

Is this a defect I need to submit to support?
