Setting Script Parameters

I cant find any examples of this.
I have a script that does a report based on department - works fine if I specify a department in code but I would really like the user to select a department. I have set up a parameter on the script that is list/record and lists the department - I can read this OK (If I set a default) but I cant find out how to set it. Do I need to do it in the URL or useing getcontext.setSetting or what ? (Thanks)
